French in a hurry

A friend has kindly invited me to a party where most of the other guests cannot speak English so in order to communicate with them I’ll have to learn French. I’d like to be able to hold a basic conversation; to ask/answer AND understand the answers to some question such as:
- what’s your name?
- how do you know the host?
- where are you from?
- where do you live?
- what do you do for a living?
- have you been to such and such place?
- is this your first visit to place X? do you like it?
- etc!
The event takes place at the end of May!!! My friend says I have plenty of time, I doubt it very much.

Sometimes he complains I take too many pictures. So I want to be more romantic and watch some sunsets (10) with him, without taking a single picture.
The first one was last September, we went up a mountain for this and it was great to be there just enjoying the moment without worrying about light/angle etc etc :)
