The words of John Lennon used to haunt me. Raised in whitebread USA, how could he say there’s no heaven, no hell below us, and no religion, above us only sky…. Then I came to L.A. Buddhists, Hindus, Jewish, Muslim, Catholics, Scientologists, Agnostics, Mormons, Greek Orthodox, Reformed, Kabbalah and on and on. Now I can’t talk to my born-again family, they have all the answers, their way is the only way. What if I’d been born in India, China, or Zimbabwe? Do they love their families any less than us? Would they not give their dying breath to save their children? Are they not as passionate and devoted to their beliefs and ideals as our religions? I get up every morning and hug my kids and love them as deeply as the most religious soul on earth. I let people in on the freeway, money means nothing to me, and I pay it forward whenever I can. I refuse to separate someone as inferior to me because they don’t think like me or have the same sexual orientation or speak my language. Imagine. Imagine a world where we really do focus on the fact that we are ALL humans, ALL the same. If there is one true God, things like global warming will make us finally see the mountaintop and realize we are all the same.
