I ran a 5k on Labor Day and managed a time of 30:18! Now some might say that’s close enough, but I’m going to keep at it and hit that sub-30 minute time in an official race. I have two coming up toward the end of the year. I’ve started trying to lower my mile time so I can be more comfortable at a faster pace in a 5k. I ran an 8:07 minute mile last week. This one’s MINE! :)

How I did it: It all started when I injured my knee in September of 2007. I needed to rehab my knee, and my wife and I decided to hike part of the Appalachian Trail in spring of 09. So we started jogging with some friends, and from that followed the goal to get my 5k time to under 30 minutes! This morning at the Jingle Bell Run in Huntington, West Virginia, I posted a time or 28:42!All I did was set goals, and stick to training with the help of my wife… Read how I did it…
How I did it: My plan was simple. I looked at where I wanted to be by getting a general idea from a BMI calculator, I figured out what I ought to be eating, using Thedailyplate.com, and I kept a log of what I ate there, along with my weight loss progress. Then I simply started to become active. I took up running. Started with the "Couch to 5k" program, and just kept on from there. I let the activity and eating right do the work and tried not to focus o… Read how I did it…
Well, it has been a hard fought battle, and has taken more discipline than I thought I had, but I think I have this bull by the horns! Strong start, strong finish they say. I have 5 pounds to go, and I’m feeling good. After I drop the 50 pounds, I will proceed to my goal weight. A total of 62 pounds in actuality. Come spring, I’m set for my hike! Now to actually start saving for the ridiculous amount of gear I’m going to need for the week on the trail! :)
A word of encouragement for those who may be having difficulties: Just hang in there. There will be days when you eat the snack you shouldn’t have, or when you don’t exercise when you should have, or any number of things. There is no need to quit. There is no need to worry. Worry never fixed anything. It just makes you discouraged and miserable here and now. You haven’t ruined your chances. You just need to stay on the horse and keep your head down and go for it! Find something to think about that reminds you of your goal, not your current position. Some call it a mantra. For me, “The less I weigh, the less I have to carry up that mountain!” is how I get through a run, or turn down candy, or anything else that may hinder. That and a prayer. Maybe it’s music, or clothing you’d like to fit into. Could be anything. Just stay the course and keep plugging along. Soon your progress will be further encouragement. Where will you be next year at this time if you stay with it? Good luck, and God bless! You’ll make it!

Well, I have currently lost 32 pounds. That leaves 18 pounds to go. In reality I will probably lose a little more than 50 pounds when this is all finished, but 50 is the first goal. I have been limiting calories and exercising daily. Usually running. I am down to under a 9 minute mile, but I need to be able to do that for more than 3 miles at once to accomplish my other goal of running a 5k in under 30 minutes. Anyway, I’m feeling good, feeling strong and feeling determined. I’m going to pull this one off!
