How I did it: I'm not sure this is going to be terrifically helpful, but... basically, I have family in D.C., so I didn't have to make arrangements for housing. I went to D.C. for the Inauguration ceremony. I left Sunday night, stayed at my cousins, toured D.C. on Monday, stayed another night, went to see Obama's speech, and left right after that. I just checked today, and the audition information is up on the website. I’m going to start making my video tomorrow. I’m so excited!
I've been meaning to do this for years

For the past three or so seasons, I’ve been meaning to audition. Three years ago, I was sick, two years ago, I had to work, and last year I took my brother to see an Orioles vs Red Sox game.
This year, I’m going regardless of whatever else is happening.
I’m not an amazing singer, but I am competent. I think with a little practice and maybe some lessons, I could do well in the competition. :)
