This weekend I had organized a small gathering of friends. I don’t usually invite other people to go out with me but I’m glad I did. It was wonderful.

spend less time on the internet
applications I've found helpful

ColdTurkey.com is an application that will completely block a website on your computer, regardless of browser, for any time between an hour and a week. It’s great for those weekends you want to go out of town and not think about social networking the entire time.

Another app you can download is StayFocused, which will block distracting websites after the clock runs out on a pre-set timer. I use Google Chrome, but I’m sure you can use it on Mozilla Firefox as well.

Other drastic means I’ve used includes buying a slower computer, hiding my laptop’s battery or charger, turning off my wireless internet connection and giving my laptop to a friend for safekeeping.

Whatever you have to do to not be online 24/7, do it. It’s worth it to reconnect with the real world.
