My dealer has the paperwork in-hand. It might be a month or so before I can get to his place to take delivery… but it’s still pretty darn cool that I’ve been able to make this happen.

How I did it: I found an out-of-state seller and a dealer that were both easy to work with. I also made sure to do a lot of research ahead of time, so I would understand all of the steps in the process. Read how I did it…

I called ATF NFA branch Friday morning to check on the status of the paperwork for my machine gun. It’s only been 2 months since I sent the paperwork, and the first transfer took 4, so I was only hoping to hear that it was Pending (meaning the paperwork was at least sitting in a file on someone’s desk and they hadn’t lost it). To my great surprise, they said the paperwork was Approved at the end of last week, and the dealer should have it in the mail in the next few days.
I’ve been reading Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills to get primed on some of the basic concepts of mountaineering. Some of it is somewhat familiar from experience I had in the Boy Scouts a long time ago. It is clearly a very involved sport, and will take a lot of training and experience to achieve proficiency.
