I want to experience this at its peak, and I know there are cycles of, I think, 11 years. Also, I imagine this is more spectacular when away from the light pollution of cities (as is telescope viewing or meteor showers). What do you recommend for the best place (how far north, etc.) to see the Aurora Borealis? Is it better when the weather is coldest, or does the season matter?

Southern route good in winter
I did a southerly route over 10 years ago from Virginia to New Orleans to the southern tip of TX, a few nights in Mexico (by bus), then to LA. Western TX very windy. Driving is VERY BORING in the Plains states (Kansas, TX, etc.). (I’ve done MANY trips across country via various routes and the middle of the country is very flat and featureless geographically.) Utah has AMAZING canyons!! Stay out west (Utah, Arizona, New Mexico) as long as possible to see the natural wonders and don’t take this trip in the summer unless you like HOT weather!!
