Don’t give up on it! When I was young, and first driving, two different friends took me out and tried to teach me to drive standard, but I only got one lesson from each friend, and it wasn’t nearly enough. Many years later, when I was 30, I stumbled across a Ford Escort for sale. The kid needed to get rid of it pretty quickly, and was asking $300, but the car was pretty rough, so I offered him $150 and he took it. The car was a 5 spd. I arranged to have my mother go with me to pick it up, since she had learned to drive on stick, the deal was she would drive the car home, I would follow her in her Caprice, then once the Escort was at my house, I would figure out how to drive it. The night we picked it up, while I was inside paying for the car, mom drove away in the Caprice, and left me there. My choices were figure out how to drive standard pretty quickly, or walk home. I managed to get the car home. It wasn’t pretty, but I didn’t grind the gears any. Once I had it home, I just drove around the neighborhood a bit until I was comfortable shirting gears, and knew how to start on a hill. I was driving all around town in a couple of days, and within a week or so, I was pretty comfortable driving it just about anywhere.

It was a little inflatable boat. The motion of the waves is awesome, certainly worth trying at least once.
