September 2008 and I’m about to do my last assignment for the Introduction to the Humanities course. I’ve been really pleased with my marks although have struggled with each and every assignment – it seems to take me an inordinate amount of time to do my research, assemble my material, put it into some sort of logical order and write and account that actually answers the question. I’ve learnt a few lessons – not to sign up for a summer course (keeping going during the school holidays was a nightmare), on-line tutorials didn’t work (luckily I met someone on a trip who I enjoyed swapping ideas with, mainly by email), to do my utmost not to get left behind – I did, and never caught up. Just the timed assessment to do now and then it’ll be finished. I’ve learned a lot about how to approach different types of documents, but I’ve found the OU approach to the topics under study to be quite dry and at times it’s bored the pants off me – how on earth did they manage to make the 1960s boring?

OK – so I just about managed it. Having decided to give up my job this should hopefully be the last time I have to worry about the school holidays – from now on I will look forward to them with gusto.
