Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

I actually got to go a couple of times this summer. I’d like to go at least one more time before it gets too cold. It sucks to be so broke and without energy.

So, I get home from work and he’s still passed out on the couch, but he has apparently gotten up to forage around for food. I find this out gradually. The first sign is that he got confused about where the garbage goes. My laundry hamper full of books and stuff (which came out of the car when I was trying to make it more liveable) has a garbage bag in it, on top of my things. There’s garbage in that, so I take it out and see that he tossed some garbage in before he put the bag in. So there are half-eaten apples and other stuff on some books I was planning to sell on Amazon, some other books I justbought myself, and a folder of training material for my new job. Disgusting.

So, I clean my things up as best I can, my shoes sticking to the floor because he spilled soda earlier and didn’t do a very good job of mopping it up. Then I notice that the spill went dangerously close to my modem and USB cables. I got some of that mopped up. Since I was able to get online and start typing this, I presume no real damage has been done.

One of the things that seems to have sticky brown stuff on it is the lid of my tea pitcher, which is on the counter by the dish drainer, so the spill must have gone there too(?), I figure. This makes me think, shouldn’t that lid and pitcher be in the fridge where I left it? So I look and my tea is gone from the fridge—maybe that’s what he spilled. I see that something was spilled in the fridge too, so I wipe that up and open the vegetable trays to see if anything leaked in there. And I find. Much to my chagrin, I find. Almost an entire half-gallon of ice cream in the vegetable tray. I literally shout when I find this, “MotherFUCKER!!!” Even this doesn’t wake him up. It’s nice and melted and I just toss it in the trash.

Somehow, soda or tea or something got poured into a tupperware bowl of uncooked grits too.

I’m wondering if I should even try to get him to go to bed. I’m afraid he may be sticky from the spill. This is bullshit.

So, I got a job in a hotel—actually, this company will have me working in three hotels. To do this, I had to cut my radio job down from 4 days a week to 2. So, now I drive 60 miles, three days a week, for about 64$ a day before taxes. I’ll still be driving 120 miles a day, two days a week, for about 63$ a day before taxes. It’s still not a huge amount of money, but it’s more than I had before. So, let me see if I can try to sock some away now…

See, sometimes it’s hard. Today, for instance, he was asleep on the couch sitting up. When I tried to talk to him and see if he was doing ok, he mumbled incoherently, which says to me that he either took too much of his prescribed medications, or acquired a medication from a friend, which may or may not have been a substance previously prescribed to him by his doctor.

The mumbling was no problem, but after a while he woke up and started trying to put his boots on. On the wrong feet. While he was still in his underware. I tried to tell him he needed to put his pants on first, but he said he would work it out himself.

Ok, fine.

But then when I told him I needed to go ahead and give him a kiss, so I could get on the road to my job, he started being nasty with me about how I don’t do anything for him (an exaggeration he loves) and how I had better pay him back the money I owe him (not an exaggeration, but a situation on which we’ve already come to an agreement, which I’ve stuck to so far).

He was just very surly. Before I left, I called and asked his son to stop in and check on him if he got a chance. I’m just hoping I don’t have to deal with some kind of raging terror after he’s slept it off.

Ahahahhahahahahahaha! I had it today! Made about 35$, but hey, that’s 35$ I didn’t have before. I should sleep really well tonight ‘cause I’m beat.

Picked up an application for a convenience store around the corner of my house. That’s a job I have traditionally hated, but I figure I can make some extra money at it, not have to drive far, and get as much as I can from it before it all blows up. We’ll see what happens.

I won a Yoga meditation cd on Ebay. I’ve usually enjoyed that sort of thing, although the few recordings I already have have gotten extremely old to me.

Hope this one will help me chill out.

sleep less

I’m sure sleeping too much is a symptom of my depression. Or maybe just another side-effect of the things causing my depression.

I guess I went to bed after 4 a.m. this morning and then got up around 2 p.m. I thought I was doing better, but no, that doesn’t sound so good.

If there were always something to look forward to, I would make sure to get out of bed as soon as the alarm clock goes off.

I had thought of going today. I figured I had just enough money to pay my way into the springs if I used the gas card to get there but then there was scheduling confusion. So I had to get on the road to work at 4 p.m. today. I could probably have done it, but it would have been stressful.

Maybe in a couple of days. If I don’t get my period.

Some things I’ve been making stabs at:

Ebay (made maybe 30$ so far),

Making jewelry (haven’t tried to sell any of it yet),

Applied at my old local hotel job,

Picked up an application for Americorps,

Left my name and number for a job selling tix for St. Augustine’s merry-go-round,

Started trying to make a demo for an on-air radio job.

Hmmm. Well, I’ve been cut down from 28 hours a week to 19 hours a week at my job. A job I love, mind you. So, today I picked up an application for Americorps’ reading tutor program. I’m not sure I understand it entirely, but it pays a living allowance of, I think, $5600 and then an education credit of something over $2000 at the end of 900 hours of service. It would start in September.

I also applied at the hotel where I used to work. :/ I’m living in catastrophic poverty as it is. It’s really bumming me out.

Well, I may be getting closer to this one because my hours have been cut at work again. I won’t be working on Fridays anymore so I’ll have that time to get things set up for a Saturday.

Yeah, I have a condition that makes it really desireable for me to get a pap smear at least every year. I haven’t gotten one for at least five years. Maybe more, I’m really not sure. I can’t afford it. I don’t have insurance. When I used to get them at the health department, strictly so I could get birth control, they told me my condition meant I should be seeing a ‘regular’ OB GYN.

organize my junk (read all 2 entries…)
Jesus, what a mess.

My boyfriend’s and my room: piled high with junk. A lot of it laundry.

I have a ton of dirty laundry piling up because I don’t feel like hanging stuff on a clothesline across the living room like he’s been doing all these years. I end up doing a load or two when I have to. I wash ‘em in our washer and take them to the laundromat to dry ‘em. We have a dryer, but it needs to be wired some different way to run on our power supply. He detached the cord that was on it and says the next step is to buy the right kind of cord.

Also, I’ve been keeping my clean clothes in laundry baskets since I’ve lived with him. That’s a period of over eight years. Those take up a bunch of space. Yes, I’m lazy. I finally brought my very small chest of drawers from my mom’s house, but it doesn’t fit in the room with the huge, ugly, busted up dresser he has in there and doesn’t seem to want to get rid of. I also brought my portable, zip-up clothes closet from Mom’s but, again, no room for it in the room yet. Also, the zip-up part of the closet needs to be washed. And dried.

There’s always a bunch of paper trash on my side of the room too. This is strictly laziness, or poor time management or being a packrat. It’s books and magazines.

Maybe I should look at this step-by-step, as far as taking care of the big disorganization problem in my home. Maybe the first step is to find another dresser/chest of drawers my bf will be happy with for his stuff.

Thanks for reading.
