It’s been a while since I posted an entry. Since I posted last, I’ve finished The Ginger Man (99), Postman (98) and The Sheltering Sky(97). I thought I would love The Ginger Man, but I ended up hating it. I also read the play, and I think the play was much better than the novel, maybe because the dramatic format puts more constraints on Donleavy’s self-indulgent writing style. I have also read Donleavy’s “A Fairytale of New York” and I also thought it was shite. I guess Donleavy and I aren’t meant to be. He’s one of those writers like Annie Proulx that everybody seems to like and I have no idea why.
Postman was cool. I read it in one sitting, so it's not long, and it's a page-turner. There's a short story by Cain called "The Baby in the Icebox" which must have been the pre-cursor to P.A.R.T. It's preety good too.I really liked The Sheltering Sky. I finished it a couple of weeks ago and it's still with me (unlike Postman, for example). Totally unpredictable. And a fast read. Really good.I'm reading Sophie's Choice righht now, which I like. It's strange to me how many of the books I've read on this list involve some kind of love triangle. Under the volcano, Postman, Sophie's, Sheltering sky. Just something I noticed.Iris Murdoch and Jean Rhys are on deck. I decided to just read them in order. If I don’t, I’ll just end up putting off books like Finnegan’s Wake, and I’ll never get to them.
