St. Francis Hospital might be moving up onto the hill!!! That is big news. The board at the hospital was either looking at spending millions of dollars renovating the current building, or just moving the location up to the SBA Hill!!! In a couple days we will know for sure. Also the state of Kansas recieved a government grant for $7 million dollars to fight homelessness!!!! Only $1.7 is going to Topeka, but hey that is better then nothing. Thank God for the two wins!!!

SBA, stands for Security Benefit Association. This is a hill that was an original 400 acre mutual cooperative farm. This organization started around 1892. This was created by the Knights and Ladies of Security. They created a almost completely self sufficient powerhouse, hospital, retirement home, and a children’s home. This hill also had a school house orchard and dairy built. This hill was one of the first to use a social security type welfare system. They provided much needed help for the people of this community at this time. There wasn’t such thing as social securty at the time. FDR hadn’t came into power yet and created all of his reforms. Can anyone say Jane Addams and Hull House. This was one of the first places where there was a hospital that had 90 to 95 beds, and would only cost around $14 a week to stay or live. Many people saw this place as home. It was a kind of give and take system. Around the 1950’s the hill was finally sold to the Menniger Foundation. This foundation was set up by two brothers in their such for psychiatric help. They used the hill up until early into the 2000’s. Then they left the hill to move to Texas.

Since the hill was sold, there has been many investors and building contractors looking at the hill. Since the hill was sold for the second time, they have blocked off all entry points to get up to the hill. If you are caught on the hill you will be prosecuted for criminal trespassing.

This past weekend, my girlfriend and I decided to take a little tour of what was left on the hill. There is still the main building which is the clock tower, and some of the other power plant buildings left. But almost all of the buildings have been getting ready to demolish. One of the buildings for sure is now used as a law office. There is several signs that inform the public that the land is going to be used for residential and a future strip mall. Already they have whipped out most of the natural habitat. They have already put up tow restaurant, and a fourteen screen movie theater. This is going to cause many of the animals that live in the wilderness up there to lose their homes.

After searching and hiking on this hill for around an hour, i noticed that many of the trees were marked to be cut down. Also there was many fire pits that were hidden in the brush, where the remains of old computers lay their final resting place. It is very creepy up there. Someone is trying to hide what is really going on. This is time for someone to take a stand. But I think personally it is to late. The papers have already been signed and there is already construction going on as you read this. I just wish there was some way we could stop this.
