About 2 months ago a Coast Guard officer and his wife moved into the apartment next to mine. Our kitchens are built next to each others and connect to a ventilation fan shaft (so no secrets in the kitchen). Imagine my delight when I started hearing piano playing and gorgeous singing one day when I was home sick from work (not delighted to be sick). I met my neighbor in the hall and she confessed she was a classically trained vocalist. The pianist was in town playing with the touring company of WICKED. They had gone to college together and had gotten together with a third friend to catch up and have lunch. They played an sang for a solid hour. It was glorious.
I got transferred and sold my house. I gave my grown son the pick of the furniture. Everything he didn’t want went out on the front drive. I had it all given away by the end of the day. A lady stopped by and said “My daughters best friend just got married and they don’t have ANYTHING” I said …”Bring a truck” ... and they did.
One woman’s trash is another woman’s treasure. I am currently unencumbered by much. I have a small bed, an antique desk and chair, a card table with 4 chairs and 6 massive plants … and I do mean massive … the avocado tree we grew from a seed 3 years ago has taken over the small area where I have my twin bed. It’s wonderful, like sleeping in the forest every night.
Last weekend I went through all my clothing and filled two huge hefty sacks full of clothes. Stuff I don’t wear, can’t wear, won’t wear. It’s now in the back seat of my car awaiting a trip to the Goodwill.
I feel so much richer having divested myself of so much excess baggage. Now I just need to keep culling stuff out so that I have only the essentials. Make room for better things ahead. See my entries on building a house with lots of windows.
I have to work another 15-20 years to pay off my debts and save enough for my dream house. In the mean time I am not going to waste any time or space on things that just take up room. Other people might really need these things and I don’t. I love my job and with no one left at home I can focus all my attention there during the week. Weekends are mine to enjoy now … I don’t have to spend all Saturday morning cleaning a house and dusting stuff I don’t’ touch any other day of the week. I can drive the 4 hours to visit my grown son and his bride … and pretty soon a grandchild.
It’s really enjoyable letting go of things you don’t need anymore. Also satisfying to really spend time considering whether to buy something or not.
