Sleep Diary (in brief) 2 years ago

Nights 20 to 22 – Longer sleep required than I’d hoped
Night 22
8½ hrs sleep from 21:00 to Apr 25, 05:45

I’m still not back on the strict regime but for now it’s looking like I’m needing much closer to 8 hours per night (on the weighted average) than 7 or less – which I’d been hoping for. So when I do get back on the regime (using the other alarm clock and strictly getting up at the same time regardless), I’m considering calling it 5 as my getting up time, not 4:30 so I can have a bit more of an evening and so that my going out nights aren’t quite as disruptive.

more details

Night 19 – Rescue plan required
7¾ hrs sleep from 22:45 to Apr 22, 06:30

Last night I just sat up late with no excuse. I couldn’t afford to be very tired today so I set no alarm. This is the third late rise. I need to turn this around…

Nights 17 and 18 – Good reasons to break the rules!

This could well look like excuses but the last couple of nights I’ve had very good reasons to stay up late – and good reasons not to get sleep deprived in order to stick to the regime.

Night 18 – QT with my sister :)
7¼ hrs sleep from 22:15 to Apr 21, 05:30

Quality, enjoyable, valuable, beneficial discussion for both of us, I think.

Night 17 – Out with brothers’ band :)
6¼ hrs sleep from 01:15 to Apr 20, 07:30

...many good friends I see very infrequently. It was a good reason but it was a late gig. ...I decided that the decision-making and physical labour required on Friday for my work justified getting up late.

Night 16 – Attempt at pre-emptive lie-in
7½ hrs sleep from 21:00 to Apr 19, 04:30

I’m going out tonight, likely to get to bed very late. So as an attempt to avoid the zombiness I gave myself the opportunity to go back to sleep this morning. Next time, I may simply not set the alarm, though right now that seems like a strange concept!
more details

Night 15 – Yesterday’s record amended
7 hrs sleep from 20:45 to Apr 18, 04:30

I found out yesterday that in the evening, I’d been snooring so loudly they could hear me downstairs! What this means, of course is that conrtary to my belief I’d been awake for the first two hours, I’d in fact fallen heavily asleep then woken up later when I looked at the clock!
more details

Night 14 – Two Weeks in :)
6¼ hrs sleep from 22:15 to Apr 17, 04:30

Yipee:) I’m very happy with what I’ve accomplished in the last two weeks. It should become easier from now on.

For the first time in a while, I lay in bed awake for a couple of hours last night before sleeping. Let’s see how the day pans out with my hard physical work.
more details

Night 13 – A needed big 1
9 hrs sleep from 19:30 to Apr 16, 04:3

Yesterday was truly a zombie-day. Now I’ve got this new weighted four day average sleep figure, I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of figure correlates with feeling well rested and alert.

I’d like to go out again this Thursday (Colum Regan with my brothers again), but if it I end up having to suffer another day like yesterday I’ll be tempted not to bother.

Night 12 – Too high a price to pay!
5¼ from 23:15 to April 15, 04:30

I feel hard done by at the moment because the twice I’ve gone out of a night since I started this, I’ve had to pay a high price in terms of how I’m feeling the following day. I’m looking forward to a time when I can permit myself a certain degree of spontaneity in my sleeping.

I think it’s time to change my sleep records sheet because it could be telling me a lot more than it is.
more details

Night 11 – Too much food too late
7 hrs sleep from 20:30 to Apr 14, 03:30

I was at a big family meal last night which was too much food too close to my bedtime for quality sleep. It was a disturbed night’s sleep so I need to have a think about that. Getting up this morning wasn’t easy either. Going out tonight :) so a short night ahead
more details

Night 10 – Big legal sleep!
9 hrs sleep from 19:30 to Apr 13, 04:30

That was rather nice :) I really do like going to bed that early and falling asleep in a reasonable amount of time (30 mins). Tonight, I’ll go to bed 20:00 and set the alarm for 03:30.
more details

Night 9 – Back on-track but bored
5¾ hrs sleep from 22:15 to Apr 12, 04:30

The fact is that wasn’t too bad a recovery at all considering the over-sleeping of the previous night. But there’s a good chance I was saved by Steve Pavlina’s alarm practice technique because I could easily have not have got up at all!

I know I knew sometimes it would feel like this mission is a mighty long haul. Well last night/today is one of those times.

I start working again today so maybe I can learn to have more patience with the programme and give it the time it needs to reap me my rewards.
more details

Night 8 – Doh! Setback due to ‘Pilot Error’
*9½ hrs sleep from 22:00 to Apr 11, 07:30

making 3 long nights in a row but look at my waking up time :(

I set the alarm wrong last night and failed to get up. I’ve made it harder for myself now.
more details

Night 7 – 2 good night’s sleep in a row :)

8 hrs sleep from 20:30 to Apr 10, 04:45 :)

..making two long nights’ sleep in a row :)

Very pleased about that – and my average sleep per night is creeping up to something more reasonable too. Quality of sleep is not what it could be but given time…

I’m getting confident. I’ve taken some work on so I’ll see how the sleep goes in a ‘real world’ situation.
more details

Night 6 – 1st good night’s sleep :)

8½ hrs sleep from 19:15 to Apr 9, 03:45 :) :)

At last, a good night’s sleep :)
Great news :) although the quality of the sleep was not fantastic.
more details

Night 5 – Extreme Sleep Depravation!

No sleep; Apr 8 Day: 2 hrs slp from 08:00 to 10:00

Didn’t get to bed before 01:30 so sleep prohibited according to my regime. Body refused to listen and by 8am I’d briefly fallen asleep sitting on a wooden chair waking up with not a clue about times of day etc, ending up in bed! Fortunately I was saved by a phoncecall at 10:00.

more details

Night 4 – Insomnia

4½ hrs sleep from 00:00 to Apr 7, 04:30

It was difficult last night. I was very tired, yet not sleeping. For the first time it felt like what I would call insomnia. It felt different to when I’ve not been sleeping so far. Yet, eventually I slept :)
more details

Night 3 – Early to sleep but…

4½ hrs slp from 19:30 to Apr 6, 00:00; Day: 2½ hrs slp from 12:00 to 14:30

Nice to fall asleep quickly on going to bed at 19:00. I haven’t regularly gone to sleep for the night in the evening light since I was a child! I awoke at midnight though. It felt weird. This has increased my determination to make it more normal.

Night 2

No sleep

I was so excited yesterday about my determination to make this work, I failed to sleep last night! And it is then that I decided to establish some rules.
I’ve decided to write about it on 43things (that original post now archived here).
more details

Night 1

6 hrs slp from 22:30 to Apr 4, 04:30; Day: 2½ hrs slp from 12:00 to 14:30

I’d decided yesterday I would have a go at getting up at half four today. It worked. I got up, felt great, used the early time productively and still got out for a walk in the early light.

I know I want this to be the norm.

Night 0 and before

Night Zero, 2007, April 3, was without sleep.

Although since last summer I’ve had much success on the whole with getting up early to work, I’ve not been so good at sleeping early and despite trying, I’ve not managed to get up early at all when not working. It’s time to do something about it.

My sleep mission, 43 things and a website 2 years ago

Hi,

I admit I’ve got ridiculously serious about this whole sleep mission of mine – and about my writing about it. As well as keeping my record and diary posts here updated, I’ve got a website that goes into it all in much more detail. Of course I’m not expecting much interest in it but I do find in these circumstances I need to write a lot – so that’s what it’s for.

As a consequence, there’s no need for me to be going on and on here so I hope my briefer entries here won’t discourage others from posting again.

I’m happy to accept comments and discuss any of this so please feel free.

Regards,
absoprob
