Its actually not that hard to get into.
I am currently employed by a magazine and i love it. Surprisingly i have no background in writing, journalism, arts, or anything like that.
Portfolio of published work is EVERYTHING in terms of breaking into the biz. Most people don’t seem to know that.
after my engineering degree i pretty much had a change of heart and decided to work for a magazine. so i busted a$$ and built my portfolio contributing to various publications and now I’m happily employed by Details Mag.
I wrote a how to do it/ how i did it if you are interested http://www.43things.com/how_i_did_it/view/6781/how-to-write-for-a-magazine
Some resources to help the rest of you build your portfolio
Email
info@shavemagazine.com
great portfolio builder (just email a request to contribute or internship, they are very nice and helpful, they don’t say no to anyone and can help you get started)
Your local newspaper
(ask about voluntary positions, usually there are only limited spots available, you may also need some sort of degree)
internship@men.style.com
internship at Details (there is only 3-4 spots available and can be unpaid work… this is more for students in some college coop program. Also depending on the year there can be thousands of applicants and it gets pretty competitive)
Good luck to all of you.
And wait till you see all the freebies a magazine job gets!!!! :)
