Helped to learn the basics of the most common plant families in my area. Also, need to learn some botanical jargon, that way reading a key makes sense. Then walk a trail and pick samples of some common plants (fruits and flowers are usually esential to ID the species). Being around people that know about this will make it much easier.
There are botanical keys published for most geographical areas, for example the smithsonian guides, and are essential to self-teach. Most include a section on plant-related terminology.
