It’s been one month already and I’ve accomplished exactly two things on this list.
- completely dead laptop that still has files I need (pending)
- oven—the striker for the gas oven won’t turn off after the gas lights, but keeps clicking throughout. I’m still waiting for the guy to come back with the magical part he needs to fix it. (pending)
- cello bridge (pending)
- stereo (pending)
- various mug handles and other bits of easily-fixed pottery (pending—the joy of slate floors)
- teapot lid (mostly fixed, but one small piece fell out last week, so pending)
- Crazy (possible liver and kidney
in progress she’s all better now, and I don’t even have to pill her anymore!) - Palm Zire 31 screen (replaced Zire, but planning on getting the other Zire’s screen fixed for backup, so pending)
- my muscles (and no doubt other aspects of my health since I’ve been subsisting mostly on cereal and not exercising, even though I have all this time to do nothing but cook heathful meals and exercise and do yoga—my jeans are starting to feel tight. Not good.)
- Replace lights in hall (
pending completed) - brackets for curtain rod (pending)
Add to this (prexisting, but forgotten about)
- buttons to replace (pending)
- winter boots: fix zipper (pending, but must do this soon!)
- other clothes to mend (pending)
A bunch of these things require me to get dressed and take things places. Why is this so hard?

I think it’s quite appropriate to finish reading this during the International Year of Astronomy. This book focuses on Galileo’s achievements interspersed with letters from his eldest daughter, who was a nun and apothecary. The letters are full of love, and comments about pills or food she is making for him, and concern for his health. And occasional requests for money (because she was a Poor Clare, and no kidding…)
I see that the only book left on my “already started” list from before is A New Earth. Add to that Life in a Medieval Castle (and the other two, Medieval Village and City) which I bought in New York and started reading on the train. So I guess those are next.

Stuff that has broken this year and fix progress. Pending means I have thought often and hard about dealing with it, but have not yet.
The hope is that putting it out here will give me incentive to get it done.
