My garden is full of birds – everything from tiny to large. They make sure that the two bird feeders get emptied, and so need filled up daily. My lunchtime task on the days I’m home, which I guess qualifies as getting out of the house…

Has ‘I give up’ been removed? I haven’t done this, I’m not going to do this, I give up on this, it’s not going to happen.
The bad: Saw the doctor this morning: yes, I have managed to get myself a perforated eardrum. Should heal in a month or two. Don’t immerse in water, and no headphones. The first is easy, the second less so (see 7 Feb).
The good: I just had positive feedback from a tester “that’s amazing, I love the way _ is set up” (actual component name omitted)
When something gets mentioned twice, in completely unrelated places, is something trying to draw your attention to it?
My bonsai started singing at me today. Well, more humming really. What happened? I was watering it, the usual way – put it in the sink, pour small amounts of water onto the top surface, fill sink up just enough for the bottom of the pot to be sitting in water. A couple of minutes later, I heard a noise. Turned the radio off – still there. Went over to the sink – yup, the noise was coming from the bonsai. I must have let it get too dry – I think the noise is caused by the water being ‘sucked up’ into the soil and the tree.
Had to demo the current state of my code to day. Thought it was going to be to the whole team, plus a business guy. Turned out to be just to my project leader. Went mostly OK, one minor problem caused by a bug introduced while fixing a bug. I hate those.
Well, I haven’t even touched it in ages. But I pickled it up today, just for a couple of minutes. Ouch! My fingers have got soft, and I’ve practically forgotten what little I did know. Oh well.
I not only managed to get into the Bird posture in yoga today, I actually held it for a bit – well, a count of 10.
I had a wonderful surprise today. A while ago. I added an mp3 player I was thinking about buying to my Amazon wishlist – nothing too expensive just a fairly basic one.
Today, it arrived. D had bought it for me. He really shouldn’t be buying me things, but it did make me smile.
I must remember to put things I’m only thinking about onto a private wishlist.
I seem to be having trouble with the goal as it currently stands – “try to find something positive each day”. Maybe I’m expecting too much? Let’s scale back the expectation, and change the goal to ‘note something about each day’.
I’m not aiming for certification, so I’ve changed the goal to reflect my real aim of updating my Java skills. This means studying the latest SE and EE tutorials, and them maybe playing with some of the other APIs out there.
I might believe new ones. Old ones repeated are no longer compliments, but routine statements. And generalisations aren’t really compliments. Compliments need to be specific.
I did put up some pictures on Photo Friday, but I haven’t done it for a while. It was interesting and challenging trying to find an interpretation of the themes, but I guess the creativity I needed just wasn’t there.
I made a suggestion in a meeting (something about using making field names public static in the domain object, and using them from there rather than the mega FieldNames file), and although I couldn’t seem to get across that they’re not just used for setting data and there are other times we might want to use the name (e.g naming fields in forms), I wasn’t completely dismissed.
Although one of the guys did seem to take it as his cue to start on his seemingly pet topic of changing the persistence layer…
The demo I had to give went a lot better than expected, considering the sudden and unexpected inclusion of the department head in the audience (well, 4 people). I had assistance on awkward questions from my team lead, so while I did get flustered and nervous, things didn’t go as badly as they could have.
D. was home very late, which was A Bad Thing, but it did let me get a very very small dent made in the ironing.
Skimmed through a couple of sections of the Java tutorial. Now know about the ‘enhanced for loop’ construct.
There weren’t as many work emails as I was expecting waiting for me. The ones that were there didn’t contain too many nasty surprises.
I’ve taken a positive step towards refreshing my Java skills, downloading the latest JDK and tutorial to work through.
