Eliminated 60 passwords from home and have deleted 5 accounts. Okay, maybe that’s not halfway there, but i’m also tackling the struggles of security at the same time—you know, all that “start up” info they want you to fill out so that if you lose your password they can resend it to you? Stuff to prove you are you and not some bot or hacker? Yeah, that’s a big challenge.

Used to be my big goal in life that in death those rummaging through my estate would find one CD of materials of my life’s work in writing and images. Therefore, i might be thrown away easily, if that is what the future decided for me. Today, i am swimming in a mire of cds, most are less than half full and at least 90% of them are not actually ‘my stuff’ but things i have collected. I have 145 unique login/passwords at home and another 150 at work. CRAZY! It seems i have swapped “possession clutter” for “informational clutter”. Apart from the waste involved (wasting resources to throw down info i never use onto a non-rewritable cd, wasting time maintaining logins i only ‘may use’ again ‘someday’), it is just too much.
I take a hearty bit of encouragement watching “the now generation” deal with info info info. I was raised to treasure and hold onto all info from electronic media, as it was unusual, mostly meaningful and/or irreplaceable. Now… not so much. Time to learn how to throw information away.
I expected the project to take a few days, which is all i had. I could have easily spent another 2 or 3 days on it to do a better job. I know the pros have tricks and (expensive) equipment to help them get it done in short order. So, next time, it’s going to be their job.
