Now that I’ve been living in a hotel for almost a month, and I don’t care for cable television, I’ve started walking.
The town that we are staying in is psuedo-historic. There are a few signs that talk about the events during the civil war. Apparently the rebel troops stripped naked and swam across the Cumberland River to assault the area. One sign talks about an army of naked rebel troops storming the town!
Anyway, there isn’t much in the town but at least I’m able to walk around and enjoy what is there. There are a few historic buildings but the area is mostly just poor with out of business sigs on the windows in the town square.
Mapquest say that my daily loop is about 3.5 miles, hopefully I can keep it up.

I am working during the summer for the state archaeologist department doing cultural resource management. We are working on excavating a site that is being destroyed by a highway construction project. Though I have worked on these types of projects before this is the first time that I have spent nearly a month in a hotel and coming home on weekends. Its a little weird living out of a suitcase, eating continental breakfast and going to work everyday. My crew and I are like construction workers and the rest of the hotel guest treat us with some “distrust” or something like low class workers.
I wonder if they realize that most of the crew have masters or doctorate degrees?

This was a completely voluntary research project that I did in addition to my classwork. I took the work I had done on my M.A. thesis and made a 20 page paper out of it and gave an hour long presentation at a school symposium. Though I was kicking myself for doing it I was glad that I’d gotten a head start once I was done. It was a rainy, severe weather warning day, so turnout was slim but I got some practice for professional presentations later on in my career.
