I live in a convent in SoCal. Here I pay about $800 less a month than I would to live in a studio apartment. And it includes meals. Saving this much money allows me to visit home, travel, and do fun things I wouldn’t otherwise have the chance to do (scuba!). It’s basically like living in a dorm – I’m hardly ever there. I can come and go when I please at any hour. The people I live with are mostly lay people – the sisters are always off being busy. I only really see them at meals. And everyone is very friendly. I moved here from Ohio, so it was great to have an established community around me.
I only planned on staying the minimum amount of time – 3 months, but I’m already on month four and not looking elsewhere. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to make a big move and doesn’t mind living simply.
I bought a guitar after my boyfriend and I broke up. I played for a few weeks a lot. We got back together and I haven’t been playing as much but I really want to… I am confident I can do both. :)
It’s great learning to play songs even if no one recognizes it but you and your roommate is willing to kill you.
