I’m taking online Hindi classes at Edufire, dabbling with the free Livemocha resources (not the best, but they’re free and chat with native speakers is free) and using a bunch of different websites and books. I don’t practice as much as I’d like to, but the weekly online classes at Edufire keep me on track. Every week I understand more and more of what they are singing and saying on Namaste America and in Hindi movies. Cool!

How I did it: I reviewed old textbooks, read Spanish magazines, watched Spanish TV, did free online courses and flashcards at livemocha.com and had a reasonably-priced weekly online tutor from Argentina at edufire.com. My youngest son is taking Spanish in school so I am still using it a little bit, but I am marking this goal as done for now as I do not plan to do a lot of self-study with Spanish this coming year. Read how I did it…
I live a couple of miles from my work so I walk there. When I lived in a big city, walking was never a problem since that was the way to get around. This is my main source of exercise, so I’m trying to do it every day for at least 30 minutes. When I walk to and from work I get an hour and a half of walking in, which is great.
My goal is to walk 2 hours per day. I need to find a walk that will give me that on the days that I don’t work.
I am finally on the road to doing this. A co-worker of mine lost 60 lbs last year (without surgery) and I asked her how she did it. She recommended a local clinic to me. I looked into it and decided to take the plunge.
As other have suggested, refined carbs and sugars just make you more hungry. No junk food goes without saying. Also, no pasta, no bread, no rice, no tortillas or other simple carbs. All I am supposed to eat is lean protein, low glycemic vegetables (no corn or peas) and fats like oils and butter in moderation. Also no fruit or booze!
Now I’m not perfect and I have certainly eaten all the foods I am not supposed to since starting this diet about a month and a half ago, but when I stray I try not to overdo portion and I log all my food (or try to) and just get back on the wagon the next day. I have lost 13 lbs so far and feel much better.
My total weight loss goal is 60 lbs, but my current goal is 20. After that the plan is to take it 10 lbs at a time.
Protein shakes also help!
