As soon as I got medically cleared to join the Peace Corps, all of my joints swelled up and it is likely that I have Rheumatoid Arthritis – a diagnosis that will prevent me from participating in the Peace Corps altogether. I am seriously considering working independently of an international aid agency. My health has already stabilized and my doctor supports the idea. A village that I visited in Peru needs an English teacher, and friends of mine there have an extra room in their family home that I can stay in. Because I would not have a formal training process or organizational support, I was wondering if any returned Peace Corps volunteers can direct me to resources (books, websites, online forums, etc.) that they found to be essential in their training process. I appreciate any feedback.

I really appreciate the stories other applicants and returned Peace Corps volunteers have shared through this website. I began the application process in September, and after numerous doctor visits, nervous announcements to family members, and investigations into the efficacy of the organization, I am patiently awaiting an invitation. I have been nominated to the NGO Development sector to work with artists in Morocco…but I am trying to not become too attached to that placement idea. I am looking forward to the opportunity to engage in a new community, to the challenges, and to the teachings those challenges will offer.
My best friend and I are looking to leave our city dwellings behind to spend some quality time with nature and with each other. We are hoping that the time will shake up our creative bones and inspire new drawings and quiet quiet music. Ideally, we hope to find a sublet or temporary arrangement from mid-May through August. I thought that I would just throw this out there, in case anyone knows of a fitting situation.
