How I did it: I started going to an open mic night, and through that open mic night I met another musician who invited me to play at a recurring event that she hosted. I met a bunch of other musicians at that event, one of whom was starting a band. Read how I did it…
I would love to just take a year off from work, and do nothing. But even better, I would love to do stuff that I love – to improve my ability playing saxophone/piano/guitar/songwriting/drawing.
I often hear stories about musicians who took year(s) off and just practiced, the two that come to mind right now are Sonny Rollins and Eric Clapton. They became some of the top musicians of their generation, and certainly made a living off the time they took off to practice.
I tried doing National Solo Album Month in November, and did okay. When February rolled around, I was in the middle of a song writing class, and that took up all of my songwriting energies.
This upcoming February (10 months from now) I hope to participate and write 14 songs.
But… it got me off my butt, and I have kept writing music since then. I started taking song writing classes, and am having a blast.
