For me being a better parent means spending enough time on myself that I feel “filled” enough to give to my children. Not letting myself get too run down or “empty” physically, mentally, or spiritually. It’s ironic that being a better caregiver, means taking care of yourself first, but for me that’s the key.
As parents, we know that when children start to act out or “lose it” most of the time it’s because they are tired, hungry, sleepy or sick. When we don’t feel good, we don’t act “good.” The same is for adults.
So I’m getting up early, or shutting the door at night and spending some time meditating, writing and sometimes, just playing. Enough time that I feel good, so I can parent well.
