Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

One week off

Thanks to being sick & having a very sore neck.
It’s not like the old me to stop and then start again. But it’s what I needed to do to feel better. Yoga again on Friday.

Beagle Freedom Project

(Elfy is up for adoption)

Beagles are the most popular breed for lab use because of their friendly, docile, trusting, forgiving, people-pleasing personalities. The research industry says they adapt well to living in a cage, and are inexpensive to feed. Research beagles are usually obtained directly from commercial breeders who specifically breed dogs to sell to scientific institutions.

What happens is after they test on Beagles for many years, the scientific institutions usually euthanize the beagles. This organization helps find homes for these dogs so that they can live out the rest of their lives with a family.

Here’s what you can expect from a Beagle who has seen the light of day for the first time:

They will not be accustomed to life in a home and will not have experience with children, cats, or other dogs. They will not be house-trained and accidents will happen, although they learn quickly. Many have gone directly from a commercial breeder to the lab, and have never felt grass under their feet or even seen the sun. They will have been fed a special diet formulated for lab animals and may be difficult to adjust to new foods. They will be unfamiliar with treats, toys, bedding and may never have walked on a leash. They will have lived in cages with steel wire floors and may have inflamed or infected paws from the pressure. They may be fearful of people initially and may have phobias from a lifetime in confinement or from being restrained. They are likely to have been surgically de-barked by the breeder and have an ID number tattooed in their ear. Please also be aware that although these beagles are considered healthy, you will be given very little information about the beagle’s medical history, and you will not be told its origins or what kind of testing they may have been used for.

*COLD* Annie Lennox

Cold

Come to me, run to me
Do and be done with me
(Cold cold cold)
Don’t I exist for you
Don’t I still live for you
(Cold cold cold)
Everything I possess
Given with tenderness
Wrapped in a ribbon of glass
Time it may take us but God only knows
How I’ve paid for those things in the past

Dying is easy
It’s living that scares me to death
I could be so content
Hearing the sound of your breath

Cold is the color of crystal the snow light
That falls from the heavenly skies
Catch me and let me dive under
For I want to swim in the pools of your eyes

I want to be with you baby
Slip me inside of your heart
Don’t I belong to you baby
Don’t you know that nothing can tear us apart
Come on now come on now come on now
Telling you that
I loved you right from the start,
But the more I want you the less I get
Ain’t that just the way things are

Winter has frozen us
Let love take hold of us
(Cold cold cold)
Now we are shivering
Blue ice is glittering
(Cold cold cold)

Cold is the color of crystal the snow light
That falls from the heavenly skies
Catch me and let me dive under
For I want to swim in the pools of your eyes

Hoopalicious talks about how she overcomes the resistance to practice

Ask Hoopalicious: What helps you stay committed here

...I do have a goal (resulting from being inspired by the Aerialist community) to hoop regularly in a dedicated practice that doesn’t need to be social. It is certainly a shift and there is TONS of resistance! How I am handling this is embarrassingly simple… as it turns out. Ha! I am committing to myself to hoop everyday for at least 30 minutes, and hopefully longer, everyday. When it comes time, and I am feeling all that resistance, I just… DO IT ANYWAY.

What always happens next is I get in my hoop (after a good amount of stretching), and after a few minutes of complaining in my head I begin to enjoy myself and all is WONDERFUL! Resistance is nothing other than a thought form we take too seriously (not to be confused with real intuition, but you will know the difference). And through this simplicity I am finding my way (even if it is kicking and screaming) to a disciplined, regular hooping practice. YES!

Going away present

I’m going to let a friend choose one today as a going away present. I hope she likes it.

grow my hair long (read all 51 entries…)
A woman told me yesterday

That my hair “grows like a weed”. It really doesn’t, it’s just that I cut it myself (practically weekly) but instead of a few inches I take off 1/4 of an inch or less. Going to the salon, even once is a huge set back as far as length goes.

I guess I have probably saved a few hundred dollars by not getting my hair cut for a few years, I have also saved a few hundred by not getting it foiled. It looks much better too!

I’m still taking
Biotin regularly which helps, a liquid multi mineral. I have just added MSM, just a small amount daily (while I see how it works).

Niacin (read all 9 entries…)
A few friends are trying niacin.

One friend is taking 500. He told me last night that a headache doesn’t stand a chance against niacin, he hasn’t had to use advil. He said it didn’t help his sex life or improve sex, I didn’t know he was putting it to the test that way.

Another friend takes 200 a few times a day. He likes it a lot but I’m not sure about the specifics.

I’m still taking it, the main reason is to keep my sugar cravings away.

invest in a new (quality) yoga mat
Yoga mat

The owner of the studio I go to said the Manduka pro-lite yoga mat was his favorite. Some of the other ones have a strong smell or get slippery over time but he said this one doesn’t.

I bought one a few days ago in midnight blue. :) so far so good. I’m not that picky about yoga mats though. I just wanted it to be a little bit thicker so that it would help cushion my knees, I use a blanket as well.

Just finished 40...

I created a soundtrack on grooveshark. The songs were so fun that I hooped 40 minutes non-stop. I concentrated on moving my feet the whole time & doing things in both directions.
I am starting to want to be in a bigger space to throw the hoop & do different things that need more room.
