I play with a small group of good friends, all of whom also have children. the kids fall asleep together on the couch while we play past midnight. very fun…especially in a remote mountain area where you have to invent your own fun.
i suggest being nerdy enough to read up a bit on strategy – at least learn which opening hands to fold or bet on.

but a certain book really helped spell out the ‘time-out’ formula and it’s been so successful. now, after repeating a firm boundary no more than once, i silently pick up the defiant toddler and remove to his room, setting the timer for 3 minutes. he is often completely calm and ready to talk about the issue after the bell rings.
key: wordlessly enact the consequence, if possible. most, if not all, verbal sparring in a conflict situation leads only to power struggles and not cooperation (this is if you have a strong-willed child, as i have. i think there are some children, a minority maybe, that are naturally interested in cooperation over their own desires. very rare)

the springs were filled with silt…only about a foot deep. so not much for soaking – haven’t found out if this is a permanent condition, or just seasonal.
nice hike though.
