I think… I think I’ve done this.
I’ve finally gotten my own place, a real apartment instead of a dorm, so I can stay over Christmas break and summer if I want. Even if I weren’t borrowing a car from my parents I’d still be able to get places; I get free bus fare with my student ID and I live across the street from campus anyway. I pay for college and living expenses with my own student loans, no help from parents even though they would if I asked. The only things my parents are paying for are my cell phone bills and car/health/vision/dental insurance, and I’d be able to do without all of those in a pinch if something ever happened. Savings from my part-time job are my emergency fund at the moment, until I find a better use for them. I could probably file my taxes as an independent, that’s good enough for me.

I recently moved out of my parents’ house and into a four-bedroom apartment with three other people. I picked the smallest bedroom on purpose because I know I have too much stuff and I want to bring it down a notch. I also know that my roommates have a lot of stuff and would prefer to keep it—their hobbies are crafting and LARPing and collecting; mine is cleaning.

I’m in my third year of college and so far I’ve racked up about $18,000 in loans. Most are unsubsidized. I’ve budgeted my current loan out into each month of the semester. Whatever’s left over after all of my living expenses at the end of each month will go to paying off previous loans. Nip them in the bud! I have a part-time job too, so I’ll be saving to pay for next summer without a loan.
