Ms. Hempel Chronicles by Sarah Shun-lien Bynum 2 days ago

Prolly one of my favorite books of the year—in the top three!

Ms. Hempel Chronicles tells the story of a young middle school teacher, but in many delicious layers – not everything revealed at once. It’s lyrical, literary writing at its best – not self-consciously ironic prose, but light, stunning, glorious, insight into a complicated lovely human being.

P.S. I really don’t like the illustration on the cover all that much. umm… Wait. I like the cover illustration, but just not for this book!

PPS I hope that someone like Miranda July makes a film of this book. Only she could do real justice to it, i think…

PPPS – Now i really wanna check out Sarah Shun-lien Bynum’s other book, Madeleine is Sleeping

The Story Sisters by Alice Hoffman 2 days ago

umm…. i am seriously forgetting. have i already mentioned reading this book? i think not, but if i already have, then please excuse.

anyway, if indeed i did forget, then that would be a travesty, so i will err on the side of writing about this book twice.

The Story Sisters is a twisty creepy beautiful lyrical story of three sisters who grow up with great love and with great pain.there are dark elements, heartbreak, horror, fantasy elements, travel and a beautiful fairygodmother-like grandmama who lives in Paris…

thoroughly engaging and absorbing.
