i picked out the first decent looking harmonium i saw on ebay. bought it. before paying i did research.oops. learning a bit about the way a harmonium actually works and is made, gave me different ideas about the kind of instrument i wanted…and increased my respect for the instrument. i cancelled my order for the harmonium i had bought and discovered a ‘paul and co’ harmonium in delhi going for $750. gulp. but i was obsessive about that one harmonium. kind of the steinway of harmoniums. more research. i took the plunge and bought it. nice email from delhi informed me this morning that the harmonium has shipped. i should receive it before march one.
meanwhile, i bought a book and cd on beginning harmonium. i downloaded a bunch of beautiful devotional music…women primarily, alone with their harmoniums. a very romantic notion to me right now. i recommend WAH! and donna de lory. deva premal. snatam kaur. ty burhoe. on the xtian front there is rickie byars beckwith, karen drucker. i listen to this music over and over, immersing myself in the devotional mood. sang om namah shiva quite loudly to my dogs this morning…they didn’t seem to mind.
i don’t know why. i’m 40. i was forced to years of piano lessons as a kid. i did years of hatha yoga, dream of going to india. that’s it. but i’ve become increasingly obsessed with the idea of learning the harmonium over the course of several years. my 41st birthday approaches and i’m shopping for harmoniums on ebay. welcome any and all encouragement and feedback. thank you.
