This fits into so many of my other goals (reduce clutter, live a more simplified life). I’ve basically spent most of my life accumulating books, most of which I haven’t read. I’d love to be someone who could pick up and move at (almost) anytime, and my massive book collection impedes that. Ideally, I’d have a small stack of books I hadn’t yet read, a slightly larger stack of keepers, and nothing else! I’ve already started on this, but I just have so many books and since I’m a big fan of the library, my library books are frequently in the way of me starting the books I actually own.

How I did it: I moved back after college because I didn't have anywhere else to go. After nine months, I quit my job and moved seven hours north with a roommate who was also looking to get out of her parents' house. Of course, it took me another six months to find a job, but thankfully I had enough money saved (most of the money I earned working 40 hours a week for nine months) and I was able to supplement it by working a series of temp jobs. Read how I did it…
I consider myself to be a science fiction fan, but I don’t read a lot of science fiction. To rectify this, I’m participating in a reading challenge that starts November 1 and will last one year. Hopefully this will also help me clean out my piles and piles of books that I plan to read and weed.
The challenge has 40 categories and only 5 books can count more than once, so hopefully by November 2010 I’ll have read at least 35 new-to-me science fiction books.
I’m signing up for a 5k in November – one month away! – and I’m starting to train for it. I don’t think I’ll be able to run the entirety of the 5k, but I want to be able to run part of it. I started this morning by alternating walking and running. I’d choose a stretch of my route and decide to run between two landmarks (like the end of the street to the next crosswalk) and then walk until I chose my next landmark. Hopefully I’ll be able to run longer distances soon.
