How I did it: I have a list of about thirty ideas for apps. I picked what I thought would be a simple one for my first app.First, I joined Apple's developer program for $99, and started going through the Stanford iPhone course on iTunes U.Next I hired an illustrator and a programmer on oDesk.com. I can't draw, and I'm just learning Objective-C, so this seemed like the logical thing to do.After much testing, I submitted my app to the App Sto… Read how I did it…
How I did it: I studied all the materials provided, and did the chapter questions 2-3 times. I also used some Kaplan flash cards. Most days I would study for two hours, and then on the weekend I would study for 4-8. I have a 30 minute commute and an hour for lunch. Using that time kept me on schedule. Read how I did it…
How I did it: A startup company in Kaikoura was offering a chance to ride the Segway. I've always wanted to ride one, and the price was quite inexpensive. I wouldn't buy one as it's similar to both running and bycling, except there's no exercise required. It'd like to play a game of Segway Pollo, but they operators say the Pollo really gives a beating to the machine. Read how I did it…

I’m not sure I’ll see any ROI at Macquarie Group, as they don’t seem to place a lot of value on IT knowing anything about the business. You’ll notice on all the ITG job postings, ‘finance experience’ is always one line at the bottom, and is not a requirement from the most junior programmer to the ‘enterprise architect’ roles. However, it may be worthwhile if I switch roles, and I certainly think it would help me at many of the US investment banks.
I decided to exit the program early for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the school was purchased by Kaplan Education, and this is the last trimester which I could get a degree from FINSIA. In Australia, no-one has heard of Kaplan, but in the US Kaplan is synonymous with studing to pass test without the knowledge. Second, for several of the subjects at FINSIA, I’ve been less than excited. I’ve received passing marks on the assignment with little or no comments. The more subjective the course answers, the less I enjoyed it, or found there to be any feedback in the learning experience.
I’ve completed my 8th class, and will be receiving a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment.
