I remember learning Ruby five years ago, when it was still almost unknown outside of Japania, and my first (and subsequent several other early) reaction was shock at the syntax. It was amazing how little work was necessary to express a complex concept.
It still is! I can’t imagine what I would do without Ruby these days. Even in a world full of Java IDEs and Perl scripts and Makefiles, there’s plenty of need for truly expressive languages that help you very quickly get things done. The first step is just seeing the beauty of it!
