I wouldn’t focus on this too much. Not that it isn’t a great honor. It’s just that there are more important things that come after this. It doesn’t matter that you were the top of the class if you can’t follow through in your career or even worse, in your life. Making good grades didn’t get me where I was going. The experiences I had when I wasn’t studying are the ones that have benefited me most.

My best friend and I decided to pack up my parent’s old van and head west the day after we both graduated from college. We drove through Memphis, stopped at the Oklahoma City memorial, saw Texas around us for a thousand miles during a springtime thunderstorm and subsequently bought cowboy hats in Amarillo to mark the occasion, and ended up at the Grand Canyon. Our one goal was to see the four corners monument cause it knocked out four states at once. We had no set goals for each day…we had a map and gas money..we even slept in our van half the time. It was so random but one of the best vacations I’ve ever been on at the same time. This was also the last time either one of us were actually free. She started her job as an electrical engineer the week after we got back and I went off to med school.
