Well I’ve had great big gaps of nothing with little dots of temp work here and there.
Working for Father Bob was awesome. He’s a great guy and I felt useful doing church and charity admin, being his personal assistant and helping out with the mission as well. There was a lot of organising to do with various church sacramets, weddings, baptisms and funerals, as well as a fair bit of Media liaison and general charity work. I mostly just enjoyed supporting Father Bob. Unfortunately although Father Bob wanted me to stay on the Admin manager pointed out that the temp agency contract prohibited that from happening.
At the moment I’m working for an organ donor organisation as an Executive Assistant to the Executive Chairman. It’s been a combination of hectic and thumb twiddling as the organisation is closing down. They all ran off to a conference and left me with not much to do so I’ve been trying to get up to speed with all the things I may need to know for when they come back. They haven’t told me a lot of stuff I need to know because they’ve been too busy and also the former EA and another Admin Asistant both exploded and quit leaving a bit of a knowledge vaccum. Interesting if volatile job but it’ll only last between a week to a month at most as it’s closing at the end of March.
Other bits and pieces I’ve done since I hit Melbourne are:
Glassey/Bussey – Bussing used glasses from around a bar off to be washed, restocking fridges, a bit of cleaning. Mostly it’s on your feet scooting around all night. It was fine but tiring. I liked the atmosphere. The manager was a bit of a tosser and made me hold a tray of glasses above my head before he’d give me the job. They also didn’t end up paying me. Bastards.
Deli Assistant IGA – Well, not the perfect job for a vegan. I was more looking just for general cashier or stocking or something but they stuck me in the deli. The people were nice and the IGA is a Renaissance which means awesome specialty foods. Unfortunately I felt like a hypocrite and also a bit nauseous working in the deli section so I couldn’t stay with it. I felt bad up until the point they didn’t pay me. Bastards.
Promotional work at Sexpo and Live08 – This was awesome fun. One night each. Giving people temp tattoos and stickers and raising awareness for legalising X rated materials. I got to hang out with some lovely porn stars and boost the ego with getting on stage for some playing and dancing. Everyone was really lovely and I got some freebies as well as being able to check out merchandise, displays and other performances. If I could get this sort of work full time I’d be there in a shot.
Cleaning – a mobile unit for houses and builder’s cleans (which is getting rid of all the dust and stuff for new houses for sale). It was cool getting around various parts of Melbourne (as the passenger in a van) and seeing lots of swanky houses, including a combined doctor’s office house, and a new 2 million dollar townhouse. The physical work was fine, I like not having to talk to people and being able to drift off and think of other stuff. The cleaning products weren’t too kind on my hands though, even with gloves.
So… we’ll see where to next. I’m hoping something full time because being able to pay the rent would be nice.
