hmmm 6 months ago

My car is sitting on the street doing not very much. Apart from being run into that is. And being damaged by roadworks. I haven’t had money for lessons and my car battery is dead. So this one is probably shelved until bucketloads of money or a full time permanent job comes my way.

Temp temp temp 6 months ago

Well I’ve had great big gaps of nothing with little dots of temp work here and there.

Working for Father Bob was awesome. He’s a great guy and I felt useful doing church and charity admin, being his personal assistant and helping out with the mission as well. There was a lot of organising to do with various church sacramets, weddings, baptisms and funerals, as well as a fair bit of Media liaison and general charity work. I mostly just enjoyed supporting Father Bob. Unfortunately although Father Bob wanted me to stay on the Admin manager pointed out that the temp agency contract prohibited that from happening.

At the moment I’m working for an organ donor organisation as an Executive Assistant to the Executive Chairman. It’s been a combination of hectic and thumb twiddling as the organisation is closing down. They all ran off to a conference and left me with not much to do so I’ve been trying to get up to speed with all the things I may need to know for when they come back. They haven’t told me a lot of stuff I need to know because they’ve been too busy and also the former EA and another Admin Asistant both exploded and quit leaving a bit of a knowledge vaccum. Interesting if volatile job but it’ll only last between a week to a month at most as it’s closing at the end of March.

Other bits and pieces I’ve done since I hit Melbourne are:

Glassey/Bussey – Bussing used glasses from around a bar off to be washed, restocking fridges, a bit of cleaning. Mostly it’s on your feet scooting around all night. It was fine but tiring. I liked the atmosphere. The manager was a bit of a tosser and made me hold a tray of glasses above my head before he’d give me the job. They also didn’t end up paying me. Bastards.

Deli Assistant IGA – Well, not the perfect job for a vegan. I was more looking just for general cashier or stocking or something but they stuck me in the deli. The people were nice and the IGA is a Renaissance which means awesome specialty foods. Unfortunately I felt like a hypocrite and also a bit nauseous working in the deli section so I couldn’t stay with it. I felt bad up until the point they didn’t pay me. Bastards.

Promotional work at Sexpo and Live08 – This was awesome fun. One night each. Giving people temp tattoos and stickers and raising awareness for legalising X rated materials. I got to hang out with some lovely porn stars and boost the ego with getting on stage for some playing and dancing. Everyone was really lovely and I got some freebies as well as being able to check out merchandise, displays and other performances. If I could get this sort of work full time I’d be there in a shot.

Cleaning – a mobile unit for houses and builder’s cleans (which is getting rid of all the dust and stuff for new houses for sale). It was cool getting around various parts of Melbourne (as the passenger in a van) and seeing lots of swanky houses, including a combined doctor’s office house, and a new 2 million dollar townhouse. The physical work was fine, I like not having to talk to people and being able to drift off and think of other stuff. The cleaning products weren’t too kind on my hands though, even with gloves.

So… we’ll see where to next. I’m hoping something full time because being able to pay the rent would be nice.

Got Pi? Mmm... Pi. 8 months ago

Maths is like magic to me. It’s rather intriguing but completely inexplicable. I’m not sure what I’d use it for really but I’d like to learn it anyway. I’m sure it would open up a whole new range of posibilities.

Blue Guitar 8 months ago

I have a blue guitar. It’s just a basic Ashton’s one. It was in the pile of my stuff that I had stored at my mother’s and has been delivered down to me from Brisbane by some friends. I really should learn to play it since it has travelled all the way here.

Father Bob 9 months ago

I have a temp job coming up working in a church over christmas doing administration. They have a soup kitchen, homeless van and a big community presence. I’m really looking forward to it and I’m hoping that it will open the door to more charity work positions which would be awesome. =) fingers crossed

In Storage 9 months ago

I’ve put most of my stuff in storage at my mother’s place and only brought a minimum with me to Melbourne. I managed to whittle the pile down with the garage sale and giving things away but I could still do with getting rid of more. It will mostly have to wait until I have a bigger place or go back up to Brisbane at some stage. I’ve had a few boxes sent down and I’m going through those. The big challenge at the moment is not adding too much more stuff because my hoarding ways don’t seem to have abated. I also badly need furniture to store my stuff in, so at the moment it seems like I have a lot more than I do.

Well, I’ve moved to Melbourne. I was hoping to get my license before I left but I failed my driving test first time around. Ah well. I still drove down to Melbourne with my father as a copilot, my cat as a back seat driver and a car full of most necessary possessions including my computer and gaming consoles. Now that I’m in Melbourne I need a job for money for lessons. I also need a new car battery and I’ve just finished paying for all sorts of exciting permits and registration. So, we’re on hiatus until some money tumbles out of the sky.

Moved to Melbourne! 9 months ago

Well, it all came together in the end. Still no license, but I had a co-pilot drive down with me. I’ve stored most of my stuff and am living pretty minimally but I have my cat and my computer, so all is good. Now I just need to get a job. I really love Melbourne but it’s taking a little while to settle in.

Garage Sale and Storage 11 months ago

I’m having a joint garage sale with a friend in a week, and I’ve organised to store some stuff I don’t need right now at my mother’s place so I need to get cracking with the sorting. My mother will be over tomorrow so I want to have at least some stuff ready to give her by then. I don’t want to store too much stuff, so I’ll have to be ruthless and give preference to the garage sale pile.

test approaching 11 months ago

I have my test booked for the 25th. I’m pretty sure I’m not ready. It would be great if I passed but I find it doubtful. My car is insured and registered and ready to go. If only I could get this gear shifting burnt into my brain. Then I could be driving around the countryside. It’s amazing just how well I can manage not to learn how to do this. Perhaps I’ll have to resort to rollerblades.

Lily Complete 11 months ago

I finally completed my Lily painting. It’s only taken a year. In the end I had to get my mother to sit down with me to make me finish it. Now it’s done let’s see if I can paint something in less than a year this time.

Well, I’ve done a few sketches… they’re not for the book but lets call them warm up. There have been some tiny germs of ideas floating around my brain, lets hope they’re catching.

Freezer Land 11 months ago

Well at least now I don’t have to answer phones or deal with customers. I’m picking and packing in a fridge/freezer. It’s not mentally taxing, I get exercise, it’s a late start and the pay is good. It’s bloody cold though, I have to handle some un-vegan-friendly foodstuffs amongst the mix (though they are all sealed and packaged… still, ethically…) and the hours are a bit erratic. Better than call centre, yes indeed. Doesn’t suck? We’ll see.

One of these days... weeks...months... 1 year ago

Well, it’s happening slowly… I now have a car all ready and waiting. I’m getting better with the lessons, but not confident enough to have lessons in my own car yet.
