find a good Prom date (read all 6 entries…)
Untitled 4 months ago

a really nice kid in my grade was asking his friends to go ask me if i had a date, etc. when i found out, i just cut the crap so to speak, and asked him at lunch. we dont know each other very well, but we’ll have fun. this all happened a week ago, but i was too lazy to get online.

find my XC shoes (read all 2 entries…)
the Prodigal shoes have returned at last! 5 months ago

i have checked the laundry room 3 times at least, i promise.

while looking for a pair of flipflops to throw on after soccer and before meeting my family in Peru for dinner, i moved a few windbreaker-ish coats and HALLELUJAH!

there they were. i squealed aloud with delight.

my favorite pair of shoes. i have missed them so much. how many indoor soccer practices did i have to endure without them, settling for shoes that slide all over the place, fit weirdly, have ridiculously long laces that get in the way and dont make me feel like running champion of the world?!

the answer is obviously: too dang many! in reality, about 4 practices.

alas, that means nothing now. my shoes and i have been reunited.
it is a beautiful, beautiful day, my friends.

i just dont... 5 months ago

want to do this anymore.

i have other things that matter way more.
and i think i can come up with ways to learn to love myself and others and God way more without the help of the website previously mentioned.

i think i might do some of the projects just for my own benefit and not send them in… i have already done a few and they just made me think. i did:

spend time with a dying person
photograph a scar and write about it
make a list of advice to yourself at a younger age

here’s my advice list:

Advice to Shelby Devitt at Thirteen

•Do your math homework.
•Do not go out of your way to be as weird as possible. You will be remembered for that in high school.
•Don’t mouth off to your wood shop teacher.
•Never pick fights with people just for the sake of fighting.
•Don’t write Luke a letter declaring how much you like him.
•Don’t give him that letter.
•Be open-minded. Don’t seriously think that no one understands.
•Don’t make the vacation to Indiana Beach bad for your family with an awful attitude. It was bad enough without you.
•Defrizz your hair.
•Be tough when you are at the orthodontist. If you gag and throw a fit, it takes longer before you can leave.

i find this hilarious. i hated myself at 13. i dont like to think of myself in middle school if i can help it. but! it’s been 5 years. i think i can get over it. hahah!

read a book a month in 2008 (read all 3 entries…)
march. 5 months ago

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.

i adored the book, read at the recommendation of my sister. i watched the movie again after i read it and it made so much more sense.

the one quality of Austen’s writing i really admire is her random humor—it was just kind of put in small sections, but the fact that there isnt too much humor in it makes what is there so much more awesome.
i was laughing out loud at Mr. Collin’s letters concerning the elopement of Lydia.

what a culture and society. those people were so silly.

play soccer (read all 5 entries…)
put me in coach! 5 months ago

we have had two games.
the first we lost 6-0. i played the last 8 minutes.
the next, a big deal, we won 0-1. i didnt play at all.
i kind of understand… i dont know what i am doing too well at this point, but we couldnt afford to lose it. it was against this team that’s gone to state for years and beating them would give us an upperhand in the seed meeting. so we’re ahead of them in the conference and in the sectional. already!

i’m getting better every day. sometimes i dont know why i play in the first place, but i love the excercise.

it’s so different from cross country, which is my first love. i can go on and on about cross country. it’s mostly an individual sport. it’s like, here you are: running. and the whole world is YOURS to run across. you can do anything.

then when you play soccer, you have to be aware of every little detail, and you cant just let your body do what it can and what it was meant to do. in soccer, you have other people, both your team mates and your opponants, to be aware of. you have to work with people.
now, i am good at working people, but i have a hard time adjusting to the fact that i cant have the euphoria and freedom of running an 5K. i am learning the joys and awesome feelings of playing on a soccer team.
and those ecstasies are different.

it’s seriously pro, like, if you are hardcore into making stunt kites and have all these hobby tools, and instructional stuff.

i just want to make something that flies. i’ll be content. if it gets trashed in the process, oh well!

go geocaching this summer
yarrrr, treasure! 5 months ago

geocaching. if you dont know what it is, i will attempt to make a quick recapitulation of what the whole deal is.

Geocaching is like modern day treasure hunting. You take a GPS. You go to a geocaching website.
you locate caches (i’ll explain those in a minute) in whatever area you choose by typing in the zip code.
pick the cache, get the coordinates off the site, plug them into the GPS, and go find it.

caches can be many things. they can be a container. some of these containers contain things. some include a camera to take a picture of yourself, some a notebook to write name and date of find, some are like those prize chests you had in kindergarten—take a little something. BUT you have to leave something too. there are lots of different things you can do with this. i’ve seen coupon caches. take a coupon, leave a coupon.

some of these caches are in really eay to get to places (the gazebo at Augustana College) or out in the middle of nowhere. they are usually hidden pretty well… under rocks, inside trees, etc.

i went a few times with my gifted science class in the summer of 2005. it’s wonderful.

problem is… i dont have a GPS. someone should lend me theirs.

make use of my telescope
all across the universe... 5 months ago

i was cleaning my room today (see goal on spring cleaning) and this of course includes under the bed. While down there, i found the telescope someone gave my dad, so he gave to me. I dusted that baby off, realized one of the legs won’t lock if i try to adjust the height, but other than that, it works pretty well.
i love space. i am just going to put that out there. i’ve thought about going into astronautical engineering so i can have the chance to go. and i love the planetarium. i’ve been to the Adler 3 times and i never get sick of it.
i think i should find a NASA website or something that tells me when Mars and Venus and all that is visable…
i’d have to go outside of town to use it, though, which isnt too big of a deal.

the brand of telescope is BUSHNELL.
this, i take it to be, a sign. BUSHNELL is the town where Cornerstone is. And Cornerstone is basically my favorite place on earth.
here’s to the stars.

i already told the story to her impromptu-ly, but i’m going to write it down… and she’ll help, and illustrate.

she wrote a children’s book about Casimir Pulaski.
it’s wonderful.
it is titled
Silly Hat Man.

the story we shall write is about dinosaurs.

Wes Hail good lords and ladies fair 6 months ago

one of the jesters already goes every year with her family to the one in Wisconsin. We were talking about giant turkey legs one day and the subject came up.

so now i really want an excuse to put the tights back on and don my red and green masterpeice and wear hairclips with hollyberry jingle bells in them.

oh man it’ll be so so hot outside. in our costumes. ewww.
