Reducing bit rate isn’t a good idea, unless I’m ripping from source, because this just deteriorates the sound quality.
Instead I plan to:
1. Move all music to one spot on 500Gb Hard disk.
2. Back up music to DVD.
3. Add music that I want to iPod (music already backed up to DVD).
4. Add new music to iPod, listen, rate and then either backup to DVD or delete.
5. Keep iPod up to 70% to 80% full only and constant pruning.

This is my fourth time switching over to Linux in the past 11 years, and this time it will be a permanent switch. It helps that I have two laptops. One is only Ubuntu 8.04, the other is a dual boot with Windows XP and
It’s unbelievable how easy it is now to install Linux.
1. Downloaded Ubuntu ISO from www.ubuntu.com.
2. Burn Installation CD.
3. Transfered data to an external hard disk.
4. Pop in CD and follow the instructions.
5. After Installation, I configured Wi-Fi.
6. The updated securities, etc.
7. Then followed recommendations from here.
Helps a lot that there’s so much info online these days.

Eat and Shit
Over the past year I’ve been indiscriminately adding music to my iPod and now that it’s full, I’ve come to realize the obvious. I should have had a plan to delete music in order to add future music.
I attempted a List of 100 as described here. Unfortunately I only managed to make it to 75 before I dozed off on the bed.
Solutions ranged from reducing bitrates and deleting videos to broad philophical ideas of treating the music like food. I wrote “Eat and Shit”.
A lot of the ideas work around using a work flow with smart folders. Will write something more concrete as I develop, for now its;
1. Reduce Bitrates to 192 Stereo VBR.
2. Delete items I clearly didn’t take a liking to.
3. Crete a smart playlist “Still Unheard”.
# Playlist is Full Albums
# Play Count is less than 2
# Date Added is not in the last 3 months
This is only a starting point.
