go on a road trip with no predetermined destination

My habit is to set roots, accumulate stuff, dig in deep and make homes.

For the last few years I’ve been trying to explore and be little less rooted. The first big adventure was buying my friends diesel van, loading it up with camping gear, and driving to the Yucatan. After wandering around for a few weeks, I ended up buying some property on the edge of a lake. (http://www.lakebacalar.org) – and now I visit there once a year to swim, work on the palapa, pull weeds…

This year (in about four days) once again I’m climbing back in the van, but heading north-like. I’m not sure where I want to live right now, and my substantial relationship just ended, so I don’t really have as many roots here in Santa Fe New Mexico as I used to.

The trick is just having work that you can do anywhere. I picked up a cell phone that lets me get a decent internet connection from my laptop, and most of my clients aren’t even sure where I’m located in the Real World.

Be a better DJ
Taking more care selecting music 4 years ago

Once you get a hang of the mechanics of DJ’ing, where matching beats and transitioning between songs isn’t a problem…

... then you’re faced with the fact that Picking Songs is really what DJ’ing is all about. I don’t spend nearly enough time listening to my music. I’m regularly surprised when a song breaks down unexpectedly.

And matching pitched musical songs, that’s a real beast of a job…

Some of my mixes:

Learn how to podcast
easy-squeezy podcasting 4 years ago

Today I wrote a simple PHP script which makes it super easy to put up your own podcast.

the hard part is still making good material to put online…

... but at least you won’t have to monkey around with learning about blogging, RSS, MIME enclosures, and all that nonsense.

If you know how to make mp3s and upload them to a webserver, then you’ll be able to use this script to turn them into a podcast.

Enjoy!
