When someone first suggested this to me I thought I knew what she meant. I actually know what the word “authentic” means but I wasn’t thinking clearly. I was thinking it was something you get by being spiritual or somehow being blessed—in other words, something that happened to you from the outside. Then about a month ago I told the truth about something I would normally hide and I realized that was what it was to be authentic. To live truthfully. Sometimes when something is really hard, like I think it’s really going to be hard for someone else to hear I’ll find myself thinking about sneaky ways to get out of telling the truth so I don’t have to deal with the backlash. It’s scary but at least when I’m authentic I can look myself in the eye, so to speak.

I’ve been walking 7 to 10 miles every day since January by walking to and from work (Cornell University), all over campus, plus extra walks with my toddler in his stroller. Not only have I lost 22 pounds, lowered my blood pressure, and worn through several pairs of shoes, but I’ve also been spending 50% less on gas for my car!
