I went without a car for a year by living in a city that’s dense and has great public transportation: Bogota, Colombia. It was an incredible year. Now that I’m back in Atlanta I am sharing a car with my fiance and will be taking transit most of the time, but Atlanta is not quite there yet on public transportation. That’s why I helped start a transit advocacy group here: www.cfpt.org. I highly recommend getting involved with a group like this if you’re trying to live car-free, for the encouragement, information, and comraderie. Definitely worth doing.

After a year on a Fulbright, I’ve decided academia is not for me. I want to be useful, and although I’m glad other people are out there, studying things, and there is a great deal of useful academic research being done, I just don’t think that mine would be. So instead, I’m going to finish my masters (this semester), start a family, and do good (well, I hope it will be good) work. Wish me luck!
