How I did it: A family member made a comment about my increasing waist size last year when I was visting for the 4th of July, and I realized he was right. I felt like I was starting to look pregnant - this is never good when you're a 53 year old guy. So I educated myself about weight loss, nutrition, dieting, exercise, and so forth until my brain hurt from trying to take in so much information. (Did I mention that GOOGLE is my very best friend!?) Disti… Read how I did it…
My dad was a military man (Air Force) and we moved and traveled around a lot when I was a kid, so I had the fortune to live in, visit or traverse most of the states of the union (and two foreign countries) before I graduated from high school. I had a traveling job for a number of years myself, and have managed to get to 49 of the 50 states and many foreign countries. But I’ve never had occasion to go to Maine. So that’s the final remaining piece for to finish this lifetime goal…
When I was still young (32), I got down to a 5:09 mile once, but I was only training for longer recreational running races at the time, and just hopped in on the 1-mile race occasionally at the local Community College track Thursday evening all-comer’s races. Now I’m 53, and have spent the past year bicycling hard and only toying with running, but I’ve got it in my head to see how close I can get to the 5 minute mile. I don’t actually think I’ll get there due to my age, but I’m going to see how close I can come to it! I ran a 5:37 last night on an the indoor track here at WSU, and that was 4 seconds faster than a couple of weeks ago, so I’m going in the right direction for now. I’ve only been running for about 2 months so far this season, after biking all summer. I tried running last fall and winter also, but had to stop running in January due to some unknown mysterious ailment that caused my leg muscles and sciatic/piriformis nerves to get sore and stay sore to the point I could hardly walk. I started talking vitamin D and B-100 supplements in the spring and gave up running all summer, and now I seem to be back on track. So we’ll see if I can maintain my running and even make some progress going into January/February this year. Good luck to everyone else who shares this idea of breaking the 5-minute barrier. – Cecil
