Be a designer
The trick is finding what you want to design 3 years ago

Ever since High School I’ve felt the need to design. First I studied Graphic Design until I got really burnt out on the neurotic clean perfectionism that is really counter to my style of art. Then I studied Interior Design, but ended up having to leave school before I finished and discovered that I really loved Floral Design, which is what I do now.

There are a million kinds of design in this world, Don’t be discouraged if your medium is something other than what you expect.

become more independent

My husband and I are splitting up. For the past several years I have had someone to take care of me and now the time has come for me to remember how to take care of myself.

It’s difficult now. Little things like remembering to eat are challenging, but I think it’s going to be good.

It was alot easier than expected 3 years ago

I went to The Floral Design Institute in Portland. There they gave me a solid set of training and told me to make up a resume using colorful, creative, but still professional paper and a small portfolio (mine was 5”X7”) of photos of my work. Then show up at a flower shop with both in hand and ask if they are hiring.

On my first day of job hunting I went to three floral shops. One of them called me that evening, which was a week before Mother’s Day asking if I wanted to help out. I came in the next morning and did up a couple arrangements to prove myself and worked the holiday. On Mother’s Day a couple of the employees had a falling out with the boss and suddenly my position was pretty secure. Now I am the main non management florist in the shop, and doing well. I can see how my employer could be a difficult person to work for, but I plan on hanging in for a few years because the experience is exactly what I need.
