Meditation is a good idea. Anything to take some control of your mind will help. Believe it or not-you make your thoughts..your thoughts become your feelings, and your feelings become your actions. I’m sure you’ve heard this. It is true. You can start from any of these three places to create changes, since they are all a part of the whole.
Short time help…I read. It lifts my spirits so that I can deal with whatever is causing me to make myself feel bad.
Find something to make you laugh. I think it’s a physiological thing. Calvin and Hobbes works for me.

Gratitude and appreciation go a long way towards this for me.

Depends how you mean it.
Physically…look around you at real people, not people in the media. You will measure up much better. Look at your loved ones-do their imperfections make them less lovable? Same for you.
Mentally…what helped me was trying to do something I could be proud of every day-even something small. It adds up to better self esteem. Try to be as kind to yourself as you are to others (or more, if you’re not a kind person).
