How I did it: I think the main thing to realize is that everyone is more alike than different, and that everyone experiences pain. Some experience it short-term (hunger or thirst... getting sick... a broken heart), others long-term (mental illness, being handicapped). How I did it: In middle school I decided I'd learn this and over a period of a month or two I would occasionally practice in front of the mirror. How I did it: I think I fell in love with the idea of Paris when I was fourteen or so and started picking up calendars and notebooks with pictures of this lovely city. When I had to decide between learning French or Spanish in high school, I decided on French because I thought, "Well, here's a language I'll encounter in history and literature!"
