Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

Bid a fond farewell to this site in the old style
I wrote this...

...under another goal, but I want to share it here, as well, since the bon voyage party seems to be divided between two goals. I just wanted to make sure I got to say good bye properly, so I’m including this under this goal, as well.

“I haven’t had the motivation to write on here for a while. Apathy has set in due to knowing that the site will not be here for long. But I do want to write and say that I will miss you all very much. In general, I haven’t been as active on here the last year or so as I was in the past, and now that I know the site is going away, I regret that. I have gotten to know many of you over my 7 years here. Some of you I have gotten to know quite well and others I have only slightly interacted with. Some people on here I have only exchanged cheers with occasionally and there are quite a few people here that I have never interacted with, as well. Regardless of who you are, though, thank you for making this place so wonderful. You and this site have seen me through some dark times. I have grown so much because of the people, ideas, and support from this site.

I have made the decision not to delete this account. I don’t know how many entries I will write here before it shuts down, but I’m going down with the ship. I’ve also decided that I’m not going to back up anything I’ve written here. While I am proud of many of the things I’ve written, I realize this is impermanent just like everything else in this world. I have enjoyed it for what it is worth, but I’m letting it pass. This isn’t to say I disagree with anyone who is going to do otherwise, but I feel this is the best thing for me.

I am on the 43Things Emergency Contact List, I have joined PopClogs (though I haven’t been active on there yet, and I don’t know if or when I will become active there… it’s just not the same… yet… but I have seen tremendous changes there in the last several weeks… I noticed today you could privately message people, for instance… now all we need are linkable entries for goals). And I plan to join the 43Refugees site, as well. But if anyone would like to exchange email addresses, Facebook/Twitter contacts, or even addresses or phone numbers, please message me privately.

I hope to write to many of you privately before this site goes. There are many here I would like to keep in touch with in some manner. If you are someone I interacted with a lot and I don’t get to write to you before the site closes, though, please know that you have been an invaluable treasure to me, and I wish you a life filled with courage, passion, adventure, and peace”
