Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

- The Robots.

July changes

1: Sit at the dinner table while others finish even though I’m done.

2: Try eating with my non-dominant hand to slow myself down.

3: After finishing what’s on my plate, wait at least 15 minutes before going back for seconds.

contacted a local chamber music meetup

I shot a query to a local chamber music meetup, and got a favorable response. The organizer was receptive, and intended to bring it up at the meeting they had yesterday. So we’ll see what comes of this.

Amateur composer blues

As one of my hobbies I compose music for orchestra, band, and chamber ensemble. I’m in no way a professional musician or composer, though, and never have been, so I’m not plugged in to the traditional music/performance industry in any way.

I have pretty good sampled orchestra software, so I can get a pretty good idea of what I’m composing, but the computer can’t really sound as good as a human ensemble. It takes me hours of adjustments to get a short piece of music to approximate the artistry that even a modest human player could produce in seconds.

So one of these days I’m hoping to find a group of real musicians who will play one or more of my pieces. While I’ll never quite shake the fantasy of beaming in a tux during a standing ovation after a major symphony orchestra premiers one of my pieces, I’m actually quite modest and realistic. If I can get an amateur group to put on a private performance, I’ll be ecstatic, and call this done.

Out camping now

I’m out camping with my daughter now, so I’m marking this done. We had a campfire with s’mores (1 match – I’ve still got it), for which my wife and 1 yr old joined us.

After a couple of thrilling games of “Go Fish” in the tent, we’re turning in for the night.

Now, will the thunderstorms blow in before morning?

Back to June 21

due to scheduling conflicts. And now my nephew won’t be able to make it, so it will just be me and my daughter.

My belt

I’ve been wearing the same belt for a while now, and moving between the same 3 holes for quite a while. Yesterday I found I needed to tighten things a bit, and was startled to find I’d moved in from one of the main three into a previously unused hole. Now I’ve only got one more hole left, and I’ll need a new belt!

not going to try to organize an event for October

It’s just too much to add to a crowded plate. I’ll check back in a few months and see if someone else is organizing a local event.

decided to skip a few chapters

tk (don’t need to do GUIs)
Ruby on Windows (not doing it)
extensions (advanced, it even says at the beginning to skip on first read)

I’ve noted these are all there, and if I have a need I’ll dig into them.

Keeping the same changes

Since I started partway through May, I’m going to keep my same changes for June.

Change 1: no afternoon snack unless I have fruit first

Change 2: play slow music at dinner to calm mood

Change 3: have a glass of water with every meal and snack

The goal is to make these changes a habit, so that they become mindless. I’m not there yet, but 18 days isn’t really enough to build a habit. That’s why I’m going another month.

May complete

I got a bit confused, because I thought I was doing 30 days, not the calendar month of May. It looks like they mean the calendar month though. So here’s how I fared:

Started 5/14, so total number of days participating: 18

Change #1 (no afternoon snack unless I had fruit first): 15 days (83%)

Change #2 (slow music at dinner): 11 days (61%)

Change #3 (glass of water w/every meal and snack): 15 days (83%)

don't know why this is a "failed" challenge

I don’t know why this personal challenge got logged as failed, when I actually succeeded. Maybe I didn’t get in before the date to mark it as done, so it went “failed” automatically.

In any case, I actually did meet this personal challenge.

Worth doing, not worth making a goal

I re-opened this after giving up when I realized I had succeeded without trying. So I might as well mark it done, though I still think that while the sentiment is commendable, making a goal out of it did not work out.

Do I want to add another thing to my plate?

But it seems to fall together so nicely…

Looking in the questions for this goal I found Thrill the World. (Thanks clickyfri!) The plan is to get the largest world-wide simultaneous “Thriller” dance going.

And the date for 2008 happens to be my birthday.

So, while admittedly massively on the corny side, I’m trying to decide if I want to talk to my gym and Hip Hip class about setting up a participating Thrill the World event at the gym on my birthday to participate. I have to decide if I really want to deal with all the coordination involved to do it right. But it’s months out (wouldn’t have to stress if done right), and it would make for a memorable birthday…

Climbing back on the wagon

I lost more than a week due to illness and travel, but I had my training session last night, and it’s off to zumba tonight.

Finished the first 13 chapters

I finished the first 13 chapters of the pickaxe book, but I’m going to add to my completion criteria for this goal to read all non-reference portions of the book before I call it done.

This is coming together

We’re really getting things under control from the transient we had last year when kid #2 came along. In another month I think everything will be in the groove, and I’ll be able to mark this done.

Changed the date

I’ve moved things up to June 14th from the 21st so I can bring my 6yr old nephew along. So it should be a fun night with the two kids.

I need to read the Ruby “Pickaxe” book, so I’m going to put the Logic manual away for a little while.

completion criteria

I’ve picked up a lot of Ruby through osmosis, so I think I just need to make sure I’ve dusted the corners to claim basic “learned” as a goal.

I’m going to start the Pickaxe book again (I only made it about 70 ages in before), and call this done when I’ve read the first 13 chapters.
