I am in the Army. Recently, our suicide rate has come to a record high and the suicide prevention training seems not to be helping to do anything at all. Personally, I feel that the commercials and trainings aren’t very effective. I am currently in Iraq on deployment and in the 2 months I have been here, there have been at least 3 suicides in my area of operations. I feel that the commercials we are playing now are not focused enough on what the family members have to go through when someone takes their own life. I feel that some suicides can be prevented if the person is led to think about the effect their actions will have on others. On an honest note, this is the only reason I chose not to commit suicide myself well over 15 years ago. As a military broadcaster, I have the means to make my own commercial, but I would like to get some honest feelings and quotes from people who were left behind by someone they cared about who took their own life. If you are such a person, please help me help others. Your comments are appreciated and will help me get an idea of the script I can write for this.
