I’ve been thinking about this one idea for a show for ten years now, ever since I saw Les Mis for the first time. Les Mis is both supremely brilliant (on the one hand) and a shambling, unsubtle, brute-force behemoth with a heart but no real brain (on the other). It takes a special kind of arrogance to see a show of the calibre of Les Mis and say “I could do better than that!”, but that’s the kind of special kind of arrogance I have. I want to write something with soul and smarts, something that’s more plot than picaresque.
I’ve been wanting to write it for ten years, and now, finally, I have the plot for Act 1 done, a skeleton that’s capable of carrying the weight of emotion I want to put on it. Next: the plot for Act 2. Then: Actually writing it. Watch this space…
