Transfer VHS to some digital format
Why 11 months ago

We have a large bookshelf devoted to old VHS tapes of TV programs, some of them not otherwise available. We should digitize them and dispose of the tapes, which are bulky and also not very durable.

My fantasy is for some not-too-expensive service to copy the tapes and return a disk with the video files on. Once the raw conversion is done it will be possible to edit out the bits we care about. If we have to do the transfer ourselves we will need to start sorting out which tapes really matter first because there are a lot of them.

Quick surveyof transfer services (e.g., http://www.vhstodvd.co.uk/) shows charges around twenty quid per four-hour tape, which would cost us hundreds of of pounds!

Reduce the number of devices permanently switched on to a minimum
The problem with devices 11 months ago

Things like TiVo and cable box need to be running (or sleeping) all the time. Things like VCR and DVD player could happily b eswitched off except for when needed. They currently share a socket so I would need to rearrange the way they are plugged in or something to make it easy to switch them on and off separately.

Turn off the TV rather than leaving it on standby
It's an old-fashioned CRT 11 months ago

According to our fire-safety briefing, it is still 80% powered up when left on standby and the most common cause of electrical fire—so I want to switch it off to conserve power as well as to avoid a fire hazard.
