I was only twelve when I had the chance of a lifetime to go to St. Petersburg, Russia with my dance group. I was barely old enough to truly appreciate all the museums and treasures I was seeing, but interacting with the Russian people made a big impact on me. Seeing first-hand the gradeurs of the aristocracy side-by-side with the poverty of average people (in 1994) was unlike anything I had seen before at that point.
Expensive place to find housing. Be prepared for a lengthy, competitive job search if you don’t have one set up. If you’re young and not rich, you’ll likely end up with roommates sharing an apartment or group townhome. Craigslist is an invaluable tool.
Practical advise aside, it’s an awesome, dynamic place to live, with a zllion things to do on weekends, great public transit, and nothing compares to the thrill of seeing a celebrated monument when you come back to the city from a trip and realizing, “hey, there’s the US Capitol, I’m home!”
